Sneak Peek: Tauck Reveals Interiors of ms Andorinha Riverboat

3 min read

Tauck has released the first seem at the interiors of its new river cruise ship, the Andorinha. The new ship, which has been goal-constructed to sail exclusively together the Douro River, will have décor and design and style specifics motivated closely by factors of Portuguese culture. At the same time, Tauck CEO Dan Mahar reported in a created statement that the ship will be “instantly recognizable as a Tauck riverboat” to returning attendees.

A recurring design and style topic on the Andorinha is the traditional painted ceramic tiles, or azulejos, which ended up introduced to the Iberian Peninsula by the Moors and received popular popularity in Portugal for the duration of the 1500s. Azulejo tiles (Arabic for “polished stone”) adorn many locations of the Andorinha, which includes its primary Compass Rose restaurant and Arthur’s, an option eating location on the ship’s Sun Deck. Cloth facsimiles of the tiles accent just one wall of just about every cabin, with the cabin’s toss pillows and carpeting continuing the topic. Within just the ship’s soaring atrium, railings, carpeting and lamps suspended from the ceiling all have curving designs reminiscent of azulejo models.

The azulejos are also introduced in a hand-painted tile mosaic map depicting the Iberian Peninsula and its surrounding oceans. Positioned in the Andorinha’s reception space and reminiscent of early navigational charts, the a few-foot mosaic pays tribute to Portugal’s prosperous maritime heritage of the 15th and sixteenth hundreds of years.

A second recurring topic aboard the Andorinha are grapevines, reflecting both of those Portugal’s two, five hundred years of winemaking traditions and the ongoing influence of viniculture on Portuguese culture right now. Cabins and suites all have wall lamps with ornamental metalwork suggestive of grapevines, and just about every lamp is backed by accenting wallpaper panels that also echo the topic. Much more prominently, the Andorinha’s reception space has a significant, circular, domed ceiling mild seemingly entwined in grapevines. Some 4 ft across, the fixture was crafted exclusively for the Andorinha with brass “branches” that ended up custom-forged from true grapevines.

In the course of the Andorinha, various furnishings have been sourced from major-tier Portuguese suppliers, ranging from some of the ship’s lighting fixtures and furniture to the luxurious Portus Cale toiletries delivered in just about every cabin. Last but not least, and together with the Andorinha’s decor and furnishings, the ship’s title is also rooted in community culture. Andorinhas are a species of small migratory swallow that travel to Africa each and every winter and return to Portugal just about every spring. The birds mate for lifestyle and return just about every calendar year to the same nest, and small porcelain collectible figurines of andorinhas have develop into a countrywide image of spouse and children, fidelity and dwelling.

The Andorinha is established to sail on its first cruises together the Douro in April, subsequent its christening in Porto on March 31. It will accommodate eighty four Tauck attendees in 42 cabins, which includes 12 three hundred-square-foot suites on the upper Diamond Deck, and twenty 225-square-foot staterooms mostly on the vessel’s Ruby or mid-stage deck. The remaining lodging (6 two hundred-square-foot cabins and 4 150-square-foot cabins) will be on the decreased or Emerald Deck.

Tauck is offering a few Douro River itineraries aboard the Andorinha in 2020: a 12-day journey that bookends a 7-evening Douro cruise with two-evening lodge stays in Lisbon and Madrid, an eight-day “cruise-only” itinerary together the river and an eight-day Tauck Bridges cruise developed precisely for families.
